I went to the Meiji Shrine to see the start of the La Fest Mille Miglia 2010 today. It was raining, but since it was close by to my house, I started off and got there about 11am. For some reason, there were cars already coming out of the car park. I asked the official what time the start is and he told me it was 11am. I thought it was odd, but then found out that they started out from the park 11am, gathered again at Harajuku station to start from there at 12pm. I was able to see all 113 entrants start out from Tokyo. There were the regulars - 26BUGATTI¡¡T37A, 48MASERATI¡¡A6GCS driven by Japanese star M. Sakai, 54ASTONMARTIN¡¡DB2/4 by J. Inagawa. Within these stars, former Formula 1 star Aguri Suzuki and Kosuke Matsuura also a racing driver, were sitting in a 57MERCEDES¡¡BENZ¡¡300SL¡¡ROADSTER. Aguri is an old crony as we made our way around the F1 circuits, and Kosuke is that kid that used to an excited kid doing cart racing, made his way to CART/IRL. I peaked into the cockpit and saw that they had a Map ShotII and Time ShotII installed. But Kosuke said that they did not work and even if they did, they wouldn't know what to do with it. Their trip meter was also not working as "the distance would increase"... So how are they going to navigate thru the course. Apparantly for them, the iPhone is all they needed. Kosuke has never driven in a Rally race so I asked him about the rally maps. He answered that he would just follow the car in front of him and that the distance was something he would figure out as he went on. This is Kosuke's 12th year since he entered as an apprentice under Aguri. For 4 years they have almost lived toether. Kosuke said that he is thinking of making this the last act of apprentinship. Right behind Aguri/Kosuke car, was a 54¡¡FIAT¡¡1100/103TV driven by a good friend Mr. K who is a veteran of classic rallying. Its probably better that Aguri/Kosuke let Mr. K go ahead of them. The race will run all the way to Urabandai today and under these rainy skies, the open cars will have a stuggle. I hope that that everyone enjoys the 4 day 1000km rally. As for myself, I have put my .122 into the garage for a out and out check.

On the last day of the three day weekend, my .122 and myself went over the Yokohama Bay Bridge towards Minato Mirai. I met up with Mr. T formerly of CG magazine and .123GT owner Mr. O who will be my navigator this year during the Rally Nippon. The rally itself will be held over 1000km from the 5th ov Nov to the 8th, but the deciding factor for the rally will be the "line crossing" challenges so we had gathered to practice for this rather unique time control competition. Mr. T has experience in the European classic car rallies including the Mile Miglia. I have known him since my days of traveling around the world following the WRC circuit and one day, we decided that we will hold a classic rally training session. The classic car rallies in Japan generally time you in a parking space type open space where you are asked to do 30m in 7sec, 15m in 6sec, or 15m in 6sec followed by 20m in 6sec. The time is recorded up to .001 sec at the time when the front tire passes of the "line" and the placement of the rally is decided by who was closest to the instructed time. As you can see, this is a competition where .001 counts so if you are not really aligned with your navigator, 1 mere second can quickly pass. Mr. O is the proud owner of a Italian digital timer which can count down on consecutive distances, but the difference of whether you go over the line on the breathe of "ze" or "ro" when counting down "5-4-3-2-1-0" can make a difference of almost 1 second. And so we had gathered for the challenge, but Minato Mirai was teeming with police due to the APEC meeting scheduled in Nov. Thus, we made our way to a "secret" wharf where we found an ideal straight road. We laid down our pylons and rope early in the morning and spent the entire morning practicing. The temperatures in an Amazon which has no AC was sweltering but we somehow managed to get ourselves down to the 1/100 second. Both Mr. O and Mr. T said that it was important to keep the feeling of getting it right down to the 1/100 so we decided to stop at this point. Then off we went to Yokohama China Town for lunch. There is still a bit more time before the rally starts, so I am hoping I can get a bit more practice time in.

Its finally starting to get a bit more autumn-like these days and my .122 has finally come out of its summer hole where it was avoiding the heat this summer. We will be going out for a Amazon Autumn Foliage tour on the 13th & 14th of November and I needed to go out and start mapping our course. Last year, we went to Aizu Fukushima, but this year, 13 Amazons expressed their interest to participate, so I chose Fuji IC on Tomei expressway as it is easy to access from both Tokyo as it is from the West. The course will pass thru Shiraitotaki which was selected as #1 water fall in Japan, then on to Asagiri Heights, Motosu, Shoji, Sai, Kawaguchi Lakes, hopefully going thru lots of scenary in its best autumn foliage. However, as it will be the best season for sight seeing, this means we really need to be careful which roads we use or we will quickly get caught up in the big traffic jams that Japan is famous for. It took some time, but I was able to find a restaurant close by to the water fall which had plenty of parking space and a great chef where we will have lunch and walk down to the falls afterwards. The water falls were beautiful with a rainbow as an added bonus. I drove on along the Fuji lakes and decided to take a coffee break at a pretty cafe. I was also able to eat the regional dish - Hoto - for lunch. The owner of this traditional restaurant - Mr. T - was actually an Amazon owner! It was a light blue Amazon in mint condition and he also had another white Amazon for parts use. On top of this all, he was also the proud owner of a Humber Scepter which was also in envious condition. I sat for a long time with Mr. T as he talked of his love for his cars. This encounter has made me look forward with further anticipation for our Autumn outing.

Tokyo continues to be hot every day. Swedish born ¡¦122 Amazon is resting in a underground parking space to avoid this heat. However, if you go to a book store and look at a magazine called "Theory" (Kodansha July issue), you can my ¡¦122Amazon. The magazine covered Karuizawa and the famous people that live and go there in the summer. Shotaro Kobayashi, founder and editor of Car Graphic and Mr. S were interviewed as they talked about life with cars in Karuiawa - or life would not be without cars in Karuizawa. Along with this topic, a photo of my ¡¦122Amazon rallying in the Giro di Karuizawa was featured. It is a beautiful photo with my Amazon at the front, followed by MG, Fiat and Porsche making our way down a winding road surrounded by fresh vivid green foliage. The photo of my Amazon was larger than the photo of Bugatti T37A (1926) driven by Mr. M and actress K - constant winner of the classic¡¡Car¡¡rally - so I felt a bit uncomfortable - but only for a second. In any case, it is a magazine I will keep for the rest of my life.

Under searing temperature on the 18th¡¡July, various classic cars gathered in Gamagori for the La Maison Historic Car Meeting. Morgan MG, Fiat, Isetta, Toyota 2000GT all these cars were now familiar, but in this event, there were Corvettes, Hilman and other. PV544 should have been there but had to retire the previous day so Mr. Gs Red Amazon from Nagoya was called out to replace the PV544. Mr G had never been in a rally so Mr. M - a veteran of classic car rallies - rode as the navigator. Mr N and A from TACC followed in their car as support. They went off for a 150km round rallytour around Lake Irako. My 122 stood in the parking lot where the big crowd that had gathered for the event went around to look at these classic cars. Mr. G in his red Amazon did a great job despite the heat and the fact that it was his first rally and ended up 15th among 20 B group cars (2000cc). Although, at the end, the car started to make noises around the mission. In any case, I made my 300km drive back at 3am and by 7am, I was back in Tokyo. With this heat in Tokyo, I will try to avoid driving the 122 for a bit. In Autumn I will enter in the Rally Nippon and will start preparations for this big event.

The rainy season has finally come to an end and my¡¡¡¦122 Amazon set off during the 3 day long weekend to Laguna Gamagori. I went down to participate in the La Maison Historic Car Meeting. Laguna Gamagori is a beautiful yacht harbor and Mr. O with his 123GT owned a room in the adjoining apartment so I went down to enjoy the summer mood. The trouble was getting there. Being the 1st day of a 3 day weekend, I left my house at 4am but got stuck in a 40km traffic jam around Hamamatsu. The cars around all had their windows tightly rolled shut and were fully airconditioned, but my ¡¦122 had all its windows down including the little triangle¡¡windows. When the traffic came to a complete stop, I even opened the door to let some air in. In the past, my ¡¦122 would have definately gone down with overheating but even with the water temperature rose to 85C the added fan kept things under control. After 300km and 5 hours, I decided to call Mr. O and we decided I would get off at Hamamatsu and stop by to see a 123GT that was one sale that Mr. O had been keeping his eyes on for a while in Toyokawa. It turned out to be a 2 color 123GT. The engine had not been used for 4 years, but with a turn of the key, the engine kicked in. There were plenty of spider webs but the car seemed in good condition and Mr. O decided to buy the car. We then proceeded to drive down the coast and got to Laguna Gamagori after noon. The La Maison Historic Car Meeting¡¡itself was from the following day so Mr. O got out his yatch. Just as we were about to sail out, we received a call from Mr. K who was on his way down to participate in the La Maison Historic Car Meeting in his PV544. Unfortunately, the PV544 had problems with the water pump and the radiator had broken down. So, retire before the rally. They had called a wrecker car and were finally going to make it down on a rental car.

Day 2 of Giro di Karuizawa kicked off at 09h 01m on 30th May led off by car #1. We were car#44 so we started off 09h 22m 30s. The thick fog from the previous evening turned into light rain and most of the open body classic cars were covered with a vinyl sheet to ward off the rain. There were also a few empty spots in the parking lot - perhaps some early retirements. Last year, torrential rain had hit this rally and my Amazon had suffered during and after the rally from the after effect. This year, I had decided to park my Amazon at my co-driver's covered garage to my great relief. We got to the starting point slightly after 7am and saw Mr. I from Kiryu¡¡City who had driven out to cheer us on. Mr. I's Amazon was parked along side the Fiat Abarth and other Alfa support cars and made us feel charged up for the day. The day's highlight was the hair pin curves at Nidoage Toge and Usui toge. The 2nd day was "just" a half day rally so we promised each other to try to take it easy, try not to break the car and enjoy ourselves. However, the rally continued to be a high speed rally which was broadcast live over by¡¡internet¡¡the next using cameras at the time control, an on board camera on one of the MGs¡¡RallyCar and a motorcycle with a camera mounted on it. Since I was in the rally, I could not watch the broadcast but sped on thru the rally with my Marchal fog lamps fully lighted. I was using Vredestein tires and was a bit worried about them as they were made of hard compound. Luckily they gripped well even on the wet roads and enabled an enjoyable ride up and thru the mountain passes. However, I was stopped three times at a roadconstruction site (about 120sec per stop) and when I tried to make up for the lost time, was hampered by a sightseeing bus. So got a 1m 27s penalty for that section. At the final TC at the goal, I wound myself out of Usui toge to get to the control area 8m before the instructed time. I made sure I had gotten the time right and went past the final TC, but somehow got a 1m24s21 penalty at that stage. The result was 49th among 75 entrants. The winner was a 1931 Rally NCP which was its 5th win in a row at Giro¡¡di¡¡karuizawa. An entrants who had challenged by himself without a co driver came in at one of the top places, to my surprise. The only thought that remained is that I wished that this rally would hand out time cards or sign in on the time check record books to avoid any confusion that I had run into at the last TC. But then again, it is all about results and not about wishes. I really did enjoy this rally, again.

I entered into the ¡ÉGiro di Karuizawa ¡Éfor the first time last year and got hooked on the fast average time for the rally and decided to enter again this year. So from May 29th (sat) I found myself at the starting line of the rally at Karuizawa Asama Prince Hotel. From there, the rally made its way down south to Saku City and then to Special Test stage at Miyota. From there to Jizo-toge to Yunomaru racing up the long and steep hillcliming and back down to Asama Prince Hotel¡¡over 219km. Day 2 started off from Asama Prince¡¡Hotel again out to Kyu Karuizawa, Shiraito no Taki, Kita Karuizawa and Nidoagetoge back down to Asama Price¡¡Hotel covering 109km. The rally totaled 328km and at the driver's meeting, we were told that the difference in height was over 1490m and close to the ¡ÉJapan Alpen Rally¡É in the past. Mr. S who is my codriver and experienced the ¡ÉJapan Alpen Rally¡É in the past was all set to go. Total entrants were 73 cars, mainly renowned 2 door sports cars from the 1960s and not very many 4doors. Those that were there were old rally cars from the past. Oh well, the Amazon is also a rally car that made itself known at the European Rally Champion during 1983 and 84, But still, I felt a bit out of place with a '68 Morgan 4/4 in front on me and a '56 Lotus Eleven Sr1 ¡ÉLe¡¡Mans ¡Ébehind me. When we all line up at the parking lot, my Amazon stands out being tall and large within a pack of compact sports cars. But then again, thats what so fun about it. My Amazon was car # 44 and we started off on day 1 at 09.22.30. Right from the start, there was a check point. But I got by with a gap of 0.71 sec¡¡and 0.53¡¡sec which was a great improvement over last year. This year, there were 11 check points and the time was shown on a electrical board. The Special Test stage was a closed area with a great map which was very lose to a ¡Épace note¡É and allowed for full speed attack. On every corner there was a course martials. I was able to run thru it with a great deal of pleasure, but the course was only 1.3km and a bit short. A milisecond of hesitation could make a world of difference in this distance. The first day was very foggy but by the end of the day, my Amazon came in at 49th position. Unfortunately, only the top times were announced for the special test stage, so I have no way of knowing where I had ended up in this stage.

On May 8th, I participated in the TACC meeting at the parking lot of Yumenoshima sports plaza. This is a meeting place for people who like older cars, bikes and just about anything. There is no president no any rules and no club fee. I started participating at the introduction of Mr. M (Volvo P1800). The meeting now boasts about 35 members. In it there are 6 Amazons, 1 PV544, 2 P1800s. Since it is a loose gathering, no one quites knows what to expect when one participates. In this meeting there were 2 Amazons including myself. Instead of participating with a 3rd and 4th Amazon, Mr. O and Mr.M came with 2 of there old bicy£ãles - an old Nishiki and Toei. He came fully dressed for the occasion reinacting the times of the old. Another rare entry was a Berkeley. This bright red 3 wheeler open 2 seater is a 1960 British "car". It comes with an air-cooled 2cylinder¡¡250cc engine in the front - the same as a motorcyle. This means that this "car" is registered as a side-car¡¡BIKE¡É and does not need to go thru the car inspection not does it need a parking certificate. He only pays about 2,000 yen on auto taxes. But he doesnt need to wear a helmet as it is a 2 seater sportscar with a sequential shift¡¡like¡¡racingcar. The engine makes a lot of noise, but there are only 2 four wheelers, and 2 three wheelers existing in Japan. Another rare participant was a Porsche 930 - only 5 of sameyear¡¡these were manufactured. Also a Austin Healey with its crab eyes, Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce "Duet", Ferrari 456GT, Fairlady, Honda NSX. A lucky couple who had met at TACC and had gotten married recently added the icing to the Bouquet of a beautiful Spring outing.

On April 24th (Sat) and 25th (Sun) I went out on a "Amazon Boso Touring". This was the 2nd in the series of "Amazon Touring"> This time, Amazon owners around the Tokyo area gathered - 5 Amazons and 1 PV544 and what was supposed to be 1 123GT. Unfortunately, the 123GT was still in the garage and Mr. O had to enter in his BMW. Mr. S who has been my co-driver at various rallies also participated in his Benz. So a total of 8 cars started out from Ooi PA at 10am on Saturday and went down Aqualine to Kimitsu IC and on to Boso Skyline (Chiba). The parade of Amazons created a bit of a traffic jam as people turned their heads to watch us pass. This time, we had invited a professional photographer who was on Mr. O's BMW with his top pulled down. After winding our way through the hills of Boso, we had lunch at Kamogawa Ocean Par. After this, we went down the shoreline and had a coffee break at Chikura. At 4pm we reached Hatoyama-so. This is a hotel renovated from former PM Hatoyama's summer house. This is a small hotel with 29 rooms and boasts 2600 tsubos of space including seashore. It also should provide a good view of Mt. fuji but unfortunately, we only to a glimpse. But the real goal of this touring was to talk about Amazons which we had plently of time and topics. We had brought a projector with us and we passed the evening looking at scenes from various classic rallys that the participant's had entered into. We also had photos from the Amazon Owners Club between 1977 and 1982. The evening past quickly and went on into daybreak. At 11am we checked out of the hotel and quickly made our way back to Tokyo to avoid the heavy trafflc. By 1pm I was home and went out with Mr. S for soba and shochu. By 5pm, I was wasted.
