On Dec 18th, TACC held its annual touring so I went out with my .122 Amazon to Hakone. 15 cars gathered at 10am at Ebina service area under clear blue skies. As there is no clear policy to be able to join the club, the club consists of a variety of makes and types - anything from imported cars to domestic cars. The Volvos were represented by Mr. K's PV533, Mr.T's 1800S and my .122 Amazon. Other than that there was a mix of Alfa Romeos, Corvettes, Jaguars, Bluebird 410SS, Honda N360 & NSX. The one car that stood out was Mr. T's Panhard 24BT (1967). I met him at the Jingu Gaien Classic Festa but this was his first long drive attempt. People started taking photos of our cars commenting that they had seen this before and used to drive this car, but when it came to the Panhard, noone knew quite what to make of it. It has beautiful rear styling, but the company no longer exists and is a rare species. So off we went thru Atsugi to Odawara Atsugi road, onto Hakone Shindo and into Daikanzan View Terrace. We spent some time talking about our cars as we took in the view of Mt. Fuji and then off again thru the winding roads of Tsubaki Line into Yugawara and onto Atami, up over Jyukoku Pass and making our way into our destination, Ashinoko Lake. But, the 860cc 2 cycle engine Panhard out on its first long drive could not make it over the Jyukoku Pass. We called on the help of JAF. The other cars safely made it thru the 150km drive and we all relaxed in the hot springs of Hakone and enjoyed ourselves thru the night. This is the last event of the year for my .122 and it will go back into hybernation until Spring. I hope all of you will welcome in a wonderful 2012.

On Sunday Dec 4th, I was off to Yachiyo in Chiba Pref with my .122. I sped down the expressway under wonderfully clear skies, and found the restaurant owned by a TACC club member. In front of the store was a Morris Minor and a Corona Pickup so it was pretty easy to find the shop. The TACC members that gathered for this event came in all sorts of classic cars. A new Amazon showed up for the first time, a Porsche 356 Spyder, an old Corvette, a Jaguar Etype, VW Beetle, etc. There was even a 3 wheel bike made in China ! There is no real policy for the TACC, but this is why it is so fun. The TACC normally gathers at Yumeno-shima, but on this day, about 20 people made their way to Chiba to enjoy real Ceylon curry. Mr. S. the owner of the restaurant is from Ceylon originally, and he had prepared a large curry buffet for us. My schedule was a bit busy these days, but I was able to relax and wind down. There is only one more event remaining this year for my .122 which is the TACC Hakone touring on the 18th. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will have good weather.

Its the equivalent of the Auto Salon in Tokyo, but being in Germany which has a rich auto culture heritage, there were everything from classic cars, GT card to tuned cars. Classic cars were lined up from entrance which were all on sale from high priced one to a 3.25mil yen Volvo 1800 Estate to a 350thd yen Vespa. There were antique parts, head lamps, accesseories and books. In all of this, I found an antique store where I had bought some Marshall lamps in the past. The man at the store rememebered me and we started bargaining on a set of Marshall lamps. I ended up with the lamps at half the price of what was shown, which is about a 3rd of the price that its sold on net sites in Japan. I also found an original 1950s Volvo keyholder which i bought for 800 yen. For the rest, I enjoyed the Lusu ISF "CCS-R", Amphicar (1967), Trabant with Daihatsu written on the side, and a German tank with a campaign girl on top. It was strangely warm in Germany as went to see some Xmas illumination, and hopped back into the plan to get cramped into an economy class seat. I will be back in Japan again in time to participate with my .122 in a TACC meeting in Chiba.

I went to the Classic Car Festa in Jingu Gaien on the 26th Nov. It is an annual event in conjunction with the Jingu Gaien Ginko Tree festival which is about 10 minutes from where my .122 is stored. Being so close by, this is the 3rd consecutive year that I am entering. Due to the unseasonable warmth, the ginko trees still were not in their golden height and at 8am, not too many people were wandering around. Every year, we are given car numbers in the order of year make of the cars. This year, in betwen the '71 Saab 99 and my .122, a '77 Countach LP400 was parked. A bit of a sight considering the difference of height between this supercars and the 2 Swedish cars on its side. This year, 100 cars were entered with several new comers. The Datsun 1000 which I practiced on to get my driving license, The Subaru 1000 which I used to enter into my first rally, the Daihatsu Compagno Spider, Hino Contessa, all brought back good memories. At 10am, we all started off for a parade run down the ginko trees, down thru the imperial palace and around Ginza. The car in front of my .122 was a Nash Metropolitan ('59) and the 2 roundish cars caught alot of attention. We drove back to Gaien and the '50 Toyota wood fueled car make a demo run and other small events took place. The highlight of the event was the most popular car vote. Our friend Mr. T from TACC got a prize at his first entry with his '67 Panhard 24. It is a beautiful car and well deserved the prize. So, just 2 more events in December for my .122 before this season ends.

The annual Amazon Touring trip was held on Nov 12th and 13th with a record 13 Amazons participating. It was originally planned in April, but due to the 3.11 earthquake, it was postponed to fall. Well, it was supposed to be 13 Amazons, but due some mechanical problems and other, 10 Amazons and 1 PV544 gathered for the Shizuoka pref. Nihonda tour. The weather report predicted rain, but the rain fell earlier on Friday so the day fortunately opened without and rain. We gathered at the Shizuoka IC and was rewarded by a great view of Mt Fuji. Some came as far as from Ishikawa pref and Nagoya. We visited the Toro ruins as we made our way thru the winding roads of Nihondaira. We took some photos with Mt. Fuji in the background, took the ropeway up to Kunoyama Shrine and had lunch. We arrived at our hotel and everyone staying at the hotel were surprised to see such a large number of Amazons in the parking lot. After taking some time in the hot springs, we went on to fun and food. Of course, the main course was all about Amazons. The morning dawned to some fog and some of the Amazons from afar started to depart. It was another fine day and we said farewell to each other at Miho no Matsubara. 5 Amazons went on towards Kawaguchi Lake to see the American Historic Show. 180 Old American cars were lined up with Mt. Fuji in the background. The Amazon was targeted towards the US market, so we all felt some kind of connection with these old American and enjoyed ourselves. So, back to Tokyo it was. My Amazon season is starting to wind down and just a few more events in December it will go back to hibernation.

The Motorsport Japan 2011 was held on the weekend of Oct 29 and 30th. This was the 6th MSJ and since I am part of the operating committee, it was crazy busy from after Rally Nippon. This year, the space was expanded to include historic cars and replica sports cars. A popularity vote was held which added to the excitement, and the number of entrants increased to over 100k people. My friends from TACC were entering into the classic car portion with their Amazon and Fairlady 1500. The Tokyou Univ whom had been competing with me at the Rally Nippon last week were there, also, with their Celica TE22. This car won the popularity vote. I also was participating as a vendor. We put up a tent selling old F1 and WRC goods for charity. It was a busy weekend but I get to take a breather before we go off to an Amazon run with 13 Amazon's to Nihondaira on the 12th and 13th and will close off the season with an entry to the Classic Car event at Jingu on the 26th.

The last day of the 1000km 4 day race was a 200km run from Nagahama Royal Hotel on the shores of the Biwa Lake, across the great bridge, over Hiei Mountain and down into Kyoto. Car no 1 started at 8am and each car started the day with a time trial. The 3 point trial was a fast one and one with a 50m section. I made it too quickly thru the first 50m and ended up faster than was required. It was all under 1 sec but this is not enough in a classic rally. Anyway, on to Hikone Castle and around the Biwa lake and up the winding section to Hieizan. At the parking lot of Enryaku Temple, the last time trial awaited us. We tried our best, and we did not do badly, but still, lots of room for improvement. We were treated with temple vegetarian feast and a visit to the national treasure Nemotodo. I was left with the impression that it will take a lot more training for me to be attain the zen of classic car time trials. We went down the Hiei Driveway, thru the city of Kyoto and into Shimogamo Shrine. All the participated in a parade run into Kamigamo Shrine. A huge crowd awaited us at this final point. At 3pm, my .122 Amazon made it across the goal of its 3rd Rally Nippon. The weather was better than anticipated, but the times were not... We all received another blessing at the temple. I stayed after the crowd had left and wrote a prayer that I would able to achieve timings that were less than .00 sec off the mark. At least, with the help of my veteran co-driver, I was able to get a feeling. At 7pm, the final black tie dinner party sponsored by Dunhill started. The final standing were announced and my .122 Amazon was 37th among 77 entrants. Oh well. Better luck next year.

On the 3rd day of Rally Nippon, we checked out of the Toba Kokusai Hotel, wiped clean our .122 Amazon and gathered at the Ise shrine at 7.30am. The rain had let up and we started seeing signs of blue skies and whole shrine was enshrouded in a quiet calm. We parked our classic cars in front of the ootorii and traveled on foot to the main shrine where we were blessed and enjoyed some traditional music. At 10am we left the shrine and started of from Ise West IC to Tsuchiyama Inn, an old town close to the Suzuka Mountains, then onto Minakuchi- famous for being depicted by Hiroshige and on to Koga shopping mall. A large crowd had gathered at this huge mall where lunch and rest awaited, but before this, a 3 point time control. After the bad experience yesterday, we cautiously approached the control area and made it thru without too much drama. Lunch was barbecue and we were able to pick our own shiitake mushrooms which was accompanied with great Matsuzaka beef. Beer would have completed it but being a rally, this was out of the question. Hideki Togi did a traditional flute performance for the gathered crowd. I really respect his dedication to his fans and while he entertains the crowds, he still manages to hold down the time controls to the point where he is always in the top competition. After a wonderful lunch, we were treated to round 2 time control. It was in the same area as the 1st, but the speed had increased and I took the bait and came up with a shocking close to 2 sec mistake. The wonderful lunch didn't seem so wonderful anymore. Of to national treasure Kongorin Temple and again, Togi-san came up with a performance. After that, a visit to Bridgestone factory in Hikone, a stop at Taga Temple for another time trial. What started out well ended up bad. We felt badk as we went onto the Meishin expressway from Hikone IC and onto Yonebara IC by the Biwa lake. We are staying at the Nagahama Royal Hotel. We will sleep here and try to get our spirits up by the next morning.
