I went to the workshop in Nakano today to see my Amazon with the spare engine borrowed from Mr. N. The spare engine hadn't been use in quite a while, so oil was gently circulated, the engine oil was flushed, and the cooling system cleaned. At first, there was some water comingout from the water pump, but as the engine started to warm up the water stopped, and the white exhaust disappeared. If I do not over use the engine, I think I can go about now. At the same time, the actual .122 engine was going thru dismantling. The strange noise that the engine had been emitting was indeed the cam gear. The gear is towards the front of the engine and the center part of the gear which is made of Bakelite had started to fall off, making the gear become loose. Since the cam gear is a spiral gear, once the torque goes up, it gets pushed against the engine so the noise goes down, but once the torque goes down, then the gear starts uttering noises. It turned out that the rocker arm was also starting to wear down as well as the piston heads being all black. The blackness of the pistons was very unequally distributed, and is the proof how "sick" the engine was. I will be tied up this week so I will start ordering parts from Sweden and the US next week, asking for advice from Mr N.(Dr. Amazon) and Mr. O (123GT).

My Amazon was given the unfortunate glory of being the first car out of the Rally Nippon and was driven by Mr. O of 123GT to the workshop. I had followed the 4 day with Mr. S with his VW Polo so my .122 waited in the corner of the workshop with the car# still stuck on its body. Now that I am back, I will start work on the engine in earnest. The noise is getting larger, but it seems it is in the gear rather than the engine itself. In any case, I need to get the engine out and dismantle it. When I was fixing the overheating issue, I had taken out the engine and gone thru the cooling system, but at that time, the engine was not making any strange noises so I did not dismantle the engine. When I think back, I should have done an engine overhaul when I did this and I would not have had to fall out of the rally. However, as I did not have any parts, it probably would not have made a difference. On the other hand, this is the peak season for classic cars. I am planning a 6 car Amazon tour thru Shiobara on 7th and 8th on Nov and enter into the Jingu Classic Car Event on Nov 28th. But if I go thru an overhaul, it will take me 3 weeks to get the necessary parts from Sweden and US so it will take at shortest, one month. I called up Mr. N. aka Dr. Amazon and decided to "borrow"his B18 engine. I rented a truck yesterday and drove out to pick it up at a garage where Mr. C from Kamakura was having his Blue Amazon repaired. I scooted back with the spare engine and went to the workshop where my .122 awaited. Today, they will start cleaning and maintenance work on the spare engine (it hasn't been moved these past few years) and taking out the current engine in my .122. Once the spare engine is ready, it will be set in my .122 to get me around for the next month while the current engine is being overhauled.

The last day of Rally Nippon started at 07.00h from Nara Shinkokaido. The participants lined up following their car numbers and led by a pace car thru Nara National Park and Todaiji - a course normally shut out to vehicles. From there, using Keinawa Road & Daini Keihan expressway, the rally moved on to Kyoto. Kyoto is the treasure box of World Heritages and the first time control was set up at Toji. After entering the parking spot with the fabulous 5 tier pagoda in the background, the entrants were given a 10 question quizz which they had to answer within the 30 minute rest control. Some rushed for the assistance of the monks of Toji, others scrabbled to get knowledgable people thru their mobiles leaving not a lot of time to be sightseeing. At Shimogamo Temple, the entrants received a special "purification" to the great pleasure of everyone. Passing thru one temple to the other in the ancient capital of Kyoto, everyone received their stamps and went on for the final secret check and tiem control at Ranzan parkway. At 16.00h, the classic cars started to make the final goal at Ninna Temple. This was the end of 4 day 1000km race. Of the 62 entrants, 53 made it to the goal. Unfortunately, my Amazon .122 was one of the 9 cars that retired. But following with Mr. S. on his Polo, we found that despite the Rally Nippon being a first time event, it was totally satisfying in its contents and organization. The sadness of my car retiring was small compared to the satisfaction of being able to be a part of the 1st Rally Nippon. At 19.00h, the final black tie dinner was held at Kyoto Hyatt Regency along with the awarding ceremony. The entrants came down dressed in tuxes, long dresses and Kimonos. The winner was the 1925 Bugatti. The amazing thing is that this same car is the winner of this year's Mille Miglia. The climax of the dinner was the concert by Mr. T - also a participant. He played an
original called "Traveling thru Time" on his Hichiriki (an ancient Japanese pipe like instrument). I promised myself I would be back for this Unesco Future Heritage event next
year. In any case, I will go back to Tokyo tomorrow and start work on my Amazon engine and cam gear in preparation for the next upcoming event.

Rally Nippon started off at 7am from Gifu Miyako hotel on day 3 and made its way towards Nara. The rally started from the stamp point at Gifu prefectural office for a 200km day which passed thru Hikone Castle, Byodo-in, Yakushi-ji, was welcomed at a time control at Nara prefectural office and goaled at the Nara Hotel. The whole day was held under beautiful autumn skies, but as my Amazon had retired on the first day, we followed on the VW Polo. We were treated to a lunch aboard a Yakata boat at Byodo-in and were presented a red seal book (in the old days, were used as trading licences) where we received the seal. As a pre-event to the 1300 years from Heijyo Capital relocation, Miss Nara and a group of kindergarden children greeted us at the time control. At Yakushi-ji, we were able to drive into the grounds and receive yet another seal. A little before 17.00h, we checked into the Nara Hotel which boasts a 100 year history. A party which was organized by the Nara governor was held at the Nara prefectural hall. At the Japanese garden, ancient music was performed and the governor, prefectural assembly members and other prominent members of Nara were there to welcome the rally. The evening was spent on the topic of classic cars. Tomorrow is the last
day of the event and will start at 08.00h from Nara prefectural hall. The 1st Rally Nippon will come to an end tomorrow along with the tour around the World Heritages in Japan.

Rally Nippon started off on its second leg under clear skies. Before the start at 8am, the classic cars that had weathered the strom between Tokyo and Gifu were busy with final adjustment and warming their engines. My .122 Amazon had already dropped out of the race, but I made my way a bit early to the entrance of the hotel. To my surprise, I saw an Amazon 123GT which was almost the same color as my .122 parked in front of the hotel. I thought I was seeing things for a moment when I saw an older gentlement witha Volvo jacket standing next to the car. I inquired whether he was the owner and he replied that he had decided to enter into this event because a friend has urged him to, but that he had never seen, let alone entered into a rally. I suddenly remembered that several classic cars were to make a special appearance on this day to run thru the course winding its way thru Gifu, Shirakawa and Takayama. I quickly explained that I had been forced to retire with my Amazon and asked whether I could sit in the rear seat of his Amazon for the day. He happily agreed. The owner - Mr. Y. (70yrs old) runs a famous Izakaya in Gifu and had participated with his younger brother (67) because a good customer at his Izakaya had invited him. He had been the owner of his .123GT for 45 years and therefore, a one owner original Amazon. After putting on the car#69, it looked like my Amazon.122 had revived. We started at 8.36h and did 2 time controls in a row. Mr. Y told me he had thought rally was about speed and driving skills and suggested that we take a short cut, but I explained that we had to follow the course map. We arrived in Shirakawa where rain started to come down again, and with the Doburoku Festival going on, the roads became congested. A crowd had gathered on both sides of the road, and we enjoyed one of the highlights of the event. Or I would like to say, but due to the congestion, the Amazon 123GT started to overheat and we had to keep our eyes glued to the water temperature. After that, it was off to Takayama and the control. The leaves had started to turn red already and we made our way past the secret control CP and goaled a bit after 16.00h at Nagara river with 2 more time controls. It was truly a great day for me. At 19.00h, the garden party started with plenty of ayu (sweetfish or Japanese trout caught by birds - cormorants - an old traditional form of fishing in Japan) and sake accompanied by music played by Mr. T. (the entrant who is a professional ancient court musician). I sat by Mr. Y and we both agreed that being an Amazon owner brings with it lots of pleasure such as new encounters with people such as we had today. Mr. Y was all ready for his next rally and he told me he would go back to purchase a trip meter and some kitchen timers and start practicing with his brother. At 8.00h we will leave Gifu for the next stage in Nara.

Mr. Red Amazon from Nagoya awaited us at the Hamanako SA on day 1 of the Rally Nippon. We were planning a meet of 2 Amazons but unfortunately, the other Amazon had turned into a VW Polo. Since Mr. Red Amazon lives in Nagoya, I do not get to see him frequently and was very happy to see him again. Mr. Red Amaazon told us that he uses his Amazon on a daily basis and despite the heavy usage over 14000km thru rain and snow, his engine sounded surprisingly agile. His body showed some wear but this engine was alive and kicking. Mr. S. and I were made to think which was better - to keep cars as precious items and keep them covered or to use them on a daily base. Mr. Red Amazon told us that after starting to use the Amazon, he truly found out what it was to "drive" a car. There were numerous Amazon paraphenilia in the rear window and you could see the amount of enthusiasm Mr. Red Amazon put into his car. We drove together up to Nagoya interchange where he went back home. Long rally such as the Rally Nippon are truly fun as it brings old friends closer.

Rally Nippon went off to a start on Oct 17th. I woke up at 4am, went to the parking lot at Hibiya, started the engine of my poor Amazon .122 and tried to keep burden on the cam gear to a minimum and slowly made my way to the starting point - National Theatre at 6am. Even though the cam gear continued to issue forth uncomfortable noises, once arrived at the starting point, my mood was immediately taken up by the excitement around me, and the one hour to the start seemed very short. Many of my Amazon friends and TACC members had come to see me offor rather to console me. The plan was to make our way around the imperial palace and retire where Amazon .123GT owner Mr. O would pick up my Amazon and bring it to the workshop. At 7:46 we made our start. I waved to the people that had gathered but with a rather heavy heart. As scheduled, we stopped in front of the national diet building and submitted our retirement. We changed cars to Mr. S' VW Polo and followed the Rally Nippon from there. 62 cars minus one Amazon made there way down Tomei expressway towards Gifu. There is a stamp control at Ashigara SA and lunch at Nihondaira - off of Shimizu IC where a time control was set up. An excellent sushi lunch had been prepared by Sushi Yokocho but my feeling were down and I could not quite build up an appetite. However, after lunch, the rain started pouring down in earnest and watching the driver and passengers on the open cars with their rain gear and map in hand, I started to feel that my grumbling was uncalled for and started to enjoy myself a bit more. Finally at 5pm, we arrived at the Gifu Miyako Hotel. An opening ceremony was waiting for us at the hotel and I met a lot of new classic car friends. Tomorrow, the rally restarts at 8am with a time control.

We received the course guide today. It is A4 size and is like a program for operas. The cover is a photo of the Prince Skyline Sports which has not yet been officially announced. It has 110 pages and starts with regulation, goes on to course maps and then to ads. The big difference with the Mille Miglia course map is that while Mille map is all written in words, Rally Nippon uses the traditional FIA WRC type map. Along with this, we all received a Stamp Card and each time we pass the time control, we get a stamp - like a stamp rally. Using this course map and stamp card, the entrants will compete over 1000kms.

I received the neck strap holder for the credentials for Rally Nippon. I have been given various holders thru WRC, F1GP and other, but Rally Nippon is a Dunhill holder. It was presented in a big box and on the end of the strap you attach the credentials with each person's name. On the back, there is info on the hotels that we will stay at, and some emergency numbers. On the car# sticker, you can see that the top part shows Breitling and bottom Dunhill, Maybe I can use this strap after the race if over.

Tomorrow is the big day. At 7am, the Rally Nippon will start from the National Theatre. My .122 continues to make strange engine noises and it seems to be getting worse. I have been deep in discussion with Mr. O, owner of the .123 GT. Dr Amazon - Mr. N has given me lots of useful advice. As a result, I have come to the conclusion that the cam gear has broken (or is about to break). In order to see whether this is the case, I need to take out the engine. The Amazon cam gear is made of bake light and is one of the parts that can wear down easily. The crankshaft gear is made of steel so it does not wear down that easily but the camshaft gear does. After losing one nights sleep, 1. the cam gear is broken, 2. the max it will hold up is 100km, 3. there is a high possibility that my engine will blow once the cam gear gives in, 4. if the engine blows, I need to find a replacement engine. This lead me to conclude that the best and cheapest bet was to keep the engine and fix the cam gear. This means, I will start the rally, but will immediately reptire. Mr. O will be there when I retire and bring my .122 back to the service shop for intensive care. My co-driver Mr. S and myself will follow the rally in a VW Polo for our next year's challenge. The organizer have thankfully allowed this. As long as I am going to do this, I have decided I will try my best to keep this blog as updated as possible. My aim is to get more info more quicker than the organizers. Anyway, down at the parking lot of Hibiya, Mr.S and I mournfully put the car number on the .122. Somehow, .122 looked at bit sad.
