12月20日（日）「VOLVO　AMAZON　FANCLUB」（VAF）のミーティングに参加しました。ＶＡＦは、３０余年前にやっていた「VOLVO　AMAZON　OWNERSCLUB」をやむなく消滅させてしまった後に、AMAZONオーナー有志の方々が組織してくださったクラブです。快晴に恵まれた東京・夢の島公園駐車場に「・１２２」AMAZONと共にお邪魔すると、そこには、当時の懐かしい顔（もっとも、２０代後半から３０代前半当時の面影は残すものの、皆さん白髪でしたが、、、）が待っていて下さいました。３０数年振りの再会でしたが、その瞬間にタイムトリップ。かつてのAMAZONミーティングそのままに和気藹々としたAMAZON談義と、長い人生談義に花が咲きました。今回のＶＡＦミーティングには、１９６３年式から１９７０年式式まで、AMAZONが、何と８台も参加。さらに、P1800が３台、144Sが１台、164が１台、、、と、合計１３台ものAMAZONと仲間達が集まりました。遠くは群馬から２台のAMAZONをお持ちのＩさん、静岡・浜松からはＥさんがAMAZONを自走で参加、お馴染み赤AMAZONのＧさんは、名古屋から新幹線で日帰り参加をなさっていました。初めてお会いするAMAZONオーナーの方も多く、AMAZON博士で、目下AMAZONの日本での生息状況調査を鋭意進めていらっしゃるＮさんもシャシーNOとの符号、年式と型式の記録に勤しんでいました。Ｎさんによると、まだ５０台くらいはAMAZONが生息している、、、とか。当時の記録では、１９６１年に１０台、１９６２年に２０台、１９６３年に３６台、１９６４年に３４台が輸入され、１９７０年の生産中止までに合計１２３７台が日本に輸入されています。そのうちの５０台（もっとも最近ではアメリカなどからの輸入も多いようですが、、、）が、生き残っているとすると、それはそれで感慨深いことで、もっともっと「・１２２」AMAZONを大事に長生きさせてあげようと意を新たにした次第です。もちろん、私も６２歳を前に、年齢を重ねるわけですから、共に長生きしよう、、、ということで。

I participated in a "Volvo Amazon Fanclub" (VAF) meeting on Dec 20th. VAF is a club that was established after the original "Volvo Amazon Owners Club" disappeared 30 odd years ago. The day was another sunny one and I drove down with my Amazon .122 to Yumenoshima Park to see some of my old friends from 30 years ago (although they certainly did not look like they did 30 years ago). The lost 30 years were quickly forgotten and we went on and on about the greatness of Volvos. There were 8 Amazons this day - MY1963 to MY1970 in addition to 3 P1800, 1 144S, 1 164. Mr. I drove out from Gunma while Mr. E from Hamamatsu. Mr. G with the red Amazon from Nagoya came by Shinkansen for a day trip. There were several Amazons that had participated for the first time and Mr. N - aka Dr. Amazon who is compiling all the data for Japanese Amazon's ran around recording all the chassis numbers and other info. According to him, there should be about 50 Amazons "living" in Japan. According to records, 10 were imported in 1961, 20 in 1962, 36 in 1963 and 34 in 1964. By 1970 when imports were stopped, a total of 1,237 Amazons were imported into Japan. If 50 of these 1,237 are still up and running, this is quite an amazing feat. This data gave me further incentive to try to keep my Amazon up and going.

１１月９日（月）に発注したエンジン・オーバーホールに関わる部品のうち、最も重要な、壊れてしまったタイミング･ギア（ベークライト製には懲りたので、今回はスチール製をオーダー）、カムシャフトキット（Ｃカムシャフトをオーダー）その他、エンジンマウントなどなど、アメリカの「ｉｐｄ」にオーダーしたものが、約１ヶ月たっても届きません。ガスケット類や、各種補機類は、スウェーデンの「ＣＶＩ」に同時にオーダーしたのですが、いつも通り、キチンと１０日前後で届いているのに、「ｉｐｄ」は、１ヶ月たっても、無しのつぶて、、。部品が揃わなければ作業にも入れず、今、Ｎさんからお借りしているスペアエンジンもお返し出来ません。ということで、催促と現況を教えてくれるように「ｉｐｄ」にメールをしたところ、１２月１０日にカムシャフトキットが入庫（？？）するので、その後に発送するとのこと。カムシャフトは、何処から入庫するのでしょうか、、。もしや、スウェーデンの「ＣＶＩ」からだったりして、、、、。ま、円高為替で、ドルが有利、、、ということも考慮してアメリカの「ｉｐｄ」に発注したのですが、なかなか思うように事は運びません。仮に１０日に発送してくれたとしても、届くには一週間かかるでしょうから、上手く行っても年末からのエンジン・オーバーホールです。工場は年末年始はお休みですから、やはり、エンジンが復帰搭載されるのは、年明けになりそうです。Ｎさんからお借りしているスペアエンジンで年越しの様相です。

I had ordered some parts for engine overhaul on November 19th. One of the most important part was a broken timing gear. (I had changed from bakelite to steel). Also a camshaft kit engine mount and other from IPD in the US. I hav waited 1.5 months and ye nothing. CVI where I had ordered various gaskets and other had delivered in about 10 days. without all the parts, I cannot start work on my Amazon without all the parts. I sent an inquiry to IPD who then sent me back a reply seaying that they would send the camshaft on the 10th of Dec. Hopefully, IPD is not supplying their camshaft from CVI. I had decided to purchase from IPD because it seemed that the yen was more favorable against the dollar. But this is taking too much time. Even if I somehow receive the parts soon, it will not be until after new years that I can repair my car. The engine I had borrowed from Mr. N will be needed until then.

新たに貼付したステッカー「Ｄｅｎ　Ｓｋｉｌｊｅｒ　Ｅｒ　ｆｒａｎ　ｍａｎｇｄｅｎ　ＡＭＡＺＯＮ」の意味ですが、早速、名古屋の赤アマゾンことＧさんから返答をいただきました。Ｇさんによると、「Swedish Classics のカタログに英訳で”It singles you out from the crowd”と書いてあったように思います」とのこと。であれば、、Ｇさんが意訳されたように、「彼女（アマゾン）は沢山の乗り手の中から貴方を選んだ」というのも納得です。なんとも良い表現ですね。Ｇさんの赤ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、彼女かもしれませんが、私の「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮ」は良き相棒、「腐れ縁」の僚友のようなものです。いずれにせよ、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮに選ばれた私」を幸せに思い、誇りに思う今日この頃です。

先週２８日（土）の「神宮クラシックカーフェスティバル」参加を前に、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのリアウィンドウに、新たなステッカーを貼付しました。このステッカー、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」の時に、遥々名古屋から参加して下さった、Ｇさんの赤ＡＭＡＺＯＮのリアウィンドウに貼ってあり、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ」の文字がとても印象的だったので、スウェーデンのＶＰ　ＡＵＴＯのＷｅｂショッピングで購入しました。「Ｄｅｎ　Ｓｋｉｌｊｅｒ　Ｅｒ　ｆｒａｎ　ｍａｎｇｄｅｎ　ＡＭＡＺＯＮ」と書かれています。ただし、ｆｒａｎのａの上に小さな○とｍａｎｇｄｅｎのａの上に・・の”ウムラート”が付きます。スウェーデン語ですので、何と書かれているのかが興味津々。早速、Ｇｏｏｇｌｅの無料各国語翻訳で調べてみると、、、とはいえ、上記の小さな○と”ウムラート”は無しの英語表記で入力してみると、「これは、観衆からの分離、、、ＡＭＡＺＯＮ」となりました。ま、直訳なのでしょうが、本当に合っているのかどうかも定かではありませんが、これだと「個性派」とか「変わりモノ」ということでしょうか？確かに「個性派」ですし「変わりモノ」といえば、その通り、、、とも思えます。どなたか、正しい意味を教えて下さると幸いです。ちなみに、このステッカー、１枚５４スウェーデンクローネ（１クローネ＝約１３円）ですから、７０２円くらいと思い、Ｗｅｂショッピングしたのですが、ＶＡＴ（税金）やら送料などが加算され、１０４スウェーデンクローネ、つまり１３５２円、、、つまりスウェーデンなら、このステッカーが２枚買える、倍近い値段になってしまいました。

Before I entered into the "Classic Car Festival Gaenmae", I put a new sticker on the rear window of my Amazon 122. I saw it on Mr. Gs red Amazon when we went for the Autumn touring and I decided to go buy one online at the Swedish shop VP Auto. It says Den Skiljer er fran mangden Amazon. I googled the translation and got "this is a disalignment from the mass". Well, I guess this is the direct translation that means that we are all strange people ?! That may well be true. If anyone knows the real meaning, please tell me. The sticker cost me about 702 yen (54 krone), but the shipping cost was about the same cost of the sticker, so it turned out to be quite an expensive sticker.

秋晴れの１１月２８日（土）「クラシックカーフェスタ　ｉｎ　神宮外苑」（トヨタ博物館主催）に参加しました。ニュージーランドから遥々運んできたという１９２６年式フォードモデルＴピックアップなど、１９２０年台の本格的クラシックカーから、１９７９年式トヨタコルサ（クラシック？？）まで、「トヨタ博物館”学芸員”の審査選択」にもとずき、実にユル〜い車種、年式で、集まったのは８４台。ちょっと他のクラシックイベントには類をみない、国内外多種多様のクルマが集まりました。それだけに、身近な想い出にも繋がるクルマが顔を揃えて、同時開催の「いちょう祭り」に集まった２世代３世代にわたる大勢の家族連れが訪れてくれました。「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、ゼッケン６９番で、隣のゼッケン６８番は１９７１年式サーブ９９、反対側の隣は１９５９年式シルバーコルベット、、、という具合です。午前１１時前から皇居、銀座を巡るパレードが始まりましたが、「いちょう祭り」の大混雑で、大渋滞。銀座４丁目への銀座通りは、午後１２時から歩行者天国となるのですが、６９番目のスタートで「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、どう考えても、歩行者天国開始時間には、通過出来そうもない気配。ということで、コ・ドライバーのＳ大先輩ともども、”イチかバチか”のタイムアタック。バンバン先行ゼッケン車を追い抜いて、「あと一分、、間に合ったか、、、」というところで、銀座通りに突入したのですが、案の定、すでにパトカーが、交通封鎖。「時間切れ１号車」として昭和通りへ迂回してパレードコースを周回しました。ま、ただのパレードなのですが、ちょっと、緊張感のある楽しいパレードとなりました。その後は、暖かい秋の陽射しのもと、ノンビリと車両展示。次々と家族連れやＡＭＡＺＯＮに想いを馳せる年配の方々が訪れて、写真を撮ったり、お話をしたり、、、。ＡＭＡＺＯＮ博士のＮさんも来て下さり、多くの方々にＡＭＡＺＯＮの説明をしていました。もっとも、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのエンジンは、未だＮさんからお借りしているスペアエンジンですから、いわば、半分は、Ｎさんも「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのオーナーのようなもの、、、。楽しいＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義が続きました。それにしても、こんなにＡＭＡＺＯＮを知っている、、、想いを馳せる方がいらっしゃるんだ、、、と驚くほど、たくさんの方々が、、、「あ、ＡＭＡＺＯＮだ、、懐かしい、、、」と写真を撮られていたのが、とても印象的でした。たった３０００円の参加費で、都内パレードを楽しみ、美味しいお弁当をいただき、さらには、参加記念カーバッジが配布され、一日をクラシックカーファンﾄと共に楽しめる充実のイベントでした。また、来年も銀杏並木でＡＭＡＺＯＮファンの方々と交流がはかれれば、、と思っています。

November 28th (sat) turned out to be an ideal autumn day for the "Classic Car Festival in Gaienmae. The assortment started from a 1926 Ford Model T pickup and ranged to a 1978 Toyota Corsa (not sure you call these classic cars). 84 cars were selected by the xxxx at Toyota Museum under certain very loose criteria. It was a unique event with a wide mix of domestic and foreign makes and that allowed for the people to gather to find at least one car they knew. The event was held at the same time as the autumn ginko tree festival and a large crowd of grownups and children gathered to the festival. My .122 was given car # 69 and car #68 was a 1971 Saab 99, the car across was a 1959 silver Corvette. At 11am, we started off for a parade around the royal palace and the Ginza area. Because of the ginko tree festival, the street was crowded and it seemed like we would not make it into Ginza before they shut off traffic at 12 noon. I started off with my co driver Mr. S and ignored the car ahead of me to try to get to Ginza on time. We got there 1 minute before noon, but just as they had shut off traffic, so we ended up being the first car of the parade that couldn't make it into Ginza. It was just a parade but this race against time brought on a bit of excitement to it all. We got back to the Kaigakan where we displayed our cars and watched as people came by and took photos or explained the car to them. Mr. N aka Dr. Amazon also came to the event and spent quite a bit of time explaining my Amazon to the gathered crowd. Well, the current engine if the engine I borrowed from Mr. N. so you can say that the car is half his. Anyway, I was quite surprised by the number of people who said that they knew the Amazon. The event was a bargain event at 3,000 yen with the amount of fun I got with the parade, the bento, and a car badge that came with it all. I am hoping that I can do it again next year.

１１月２８日（土）は、「トヨタ博物館　クラシックカーフェスタ　ｉｎ　神宮外苑」です。明治神宮外苑の絵画館前に、内外の”選び抜かれた”１００台のクラシックカーが集まります。ＡＭＡＺＯＮ仲間の何台かも参加申し込みをしたそうですが、「トヨタ博物館学芸員の厳正な審査、選考、、、により」、今年は、私の「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮだけのようです。昨年は、ＰＶ５４４のＫさんが選ばれて参加なさっていました。ということで、「ゼッケン６９」が「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮです。会場は午前１０時から午後４時までオープンしていて、入場無料、誰でもご覧になれます。午前１０時５０分から午後１２時半頃まで、全参加車が銀座４丁目、東京駅、皇居を周回する約１１Ｋｍ５０分のパレードランを行います。神宮外苑では「いちょう祭り」も同時開催されていています。東京の銀杏も、今が見ごろ。綺麗に紅葉しています。今日は、クラシックカーの仲間達と秋の一日を楽しもうと思っています。良かったら散策がてら、お出かけになってはいかがですか、、、、。

「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」を楽しんだＡＭＡＺＯＮ仲間から、新たなＡＭＡＺＯＮグッズを頂戴しました。３４年振りに再びＡＭＡＺＯＮツーリングをご一緒した群馬・桐生市のＡさんは、コンピュータを駆使したデザイン製作がお仕事とのことで、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ　ＦＡＮ　ＣＬＵＢ」のワッペンを、「紅葉ツーリング」７台の参加者に作ってくださいました。以前、ＡＭＡＺＯＮ博士のＮさんから頂戴した、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ　ＦＡＮ　ＣＬＵＢ」のステッカーを元に、美しく刺繍されワッペンです。また、Ａさんは、同じく赤、白、緑の小さなＡＭＡＺＯＮワッペンも下さいました。さっそく、イベント等に参加するときに着用しているＶＯＬＶＯのジャンパーに付けさせて頂きます。また、「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」に、往復１４００Ｋｍ１６時間近くを”力走”してご参加いただいた名古屋の赤アマゾンことＧさんからは、素敵な”赤アマゾン”のピンバッジと、金メタルのペーパークリップを頂戴しました。この金メタルのペーパークリップですが、ＡＭＡＺＯＮのボディ部分が切り抜きとなっているのです。とても繊細なカットなのですが、私は、ダッシュボード下のボディカラーと同色にペイントされたパネル部分に貼り付けようと思っています。きっと、金色のプレートに、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのボディカラーがそのまま浮き上がることでしょう。ＡＭＡＺＯＮファンの仲間のお陰で、いろいろなＡＭＡＺＯＮグッズが集まってきます。

I have recieved a couple of Amazon items from my Amazon tour friends. Mr. A from Kiryu is a designer who uses the computer to create designs. He gave all seven of the Fall Tour participants, an Amazon Fan Club patch. It was designed off the sticker design. He also gave us all 3 small patches in red, white and green. I have already put one of them on my Volvo jacket. MR. G from Nagoya gave us a red amazon pin badge and a gold paper clip. The body of the Amazon is cut out to be able to hold paper and is very delicately made. I plan to attach it under the dashboard. I am hoping that the body color of my Amazon can be seen thru the gold plate. Thanks to my Amazon friends, my Amazon goods collection is growing with event.

８日（日）は、朝から快晴。「ゲストハウス　ダーナラ」は、夜明けとともに、ＡＭＡＺＯＮの暖気音で目覚めました。昨夜の心地よい”酔い”の余韻は残るものの赤アマゾンのＧさんとＮさんは、朝陽を受けて早速、撮影と整備。我々は素晴らしく豪勢なスウェーデン風朝食をいただき、午前９時過ぎにはＡＭＡＺＯＮ５台を連ねて会津路のツーリングに出発。樹齢４００年とも５００年とも言われる、見事に黄色に染まった「大銀杏（いちょう）」で撮影。その後は、一路、路肩に先週降ったという雪もちらほらと残る紅葉真っ只中のワインディングロードをＡＭＡＺＯＮの隊列は福島県側の尾瀬沼入口「桧枝岐」へ。ご自分でも蕎麦を打たれるＡさんご推薦の「本格的」”裁ち蕎麦”と名物”はっとう”を味わい、またまた、露天風呂で紅葉の山々を満喫。道の駅では、新鮮な野菜を買いこんで、夕方の大渋滞を避けるべく、午後３時には東北道の西那須野塩原ＩＣに乗りました。美しい夕陽に向かってＡＭＡＺＯＮは帰路に着き、私は予定通り、大きな渋滞にも捕まらず、午後５時半には、東京の自宅に帰還。しかし、そのころ、名古屋の赤アマゾンＧさんは、当然走り続けて、午後１１時にご帰宅とのご連絡をいただきました。ただ、もっと大変だったのはＮさんで、なんと、帰路でＡＭＡＺＯＮにトラブルを抱えられたそうで、ご帰宅は、午前０時２５分とのこと、、、。未明から、いち早く起きられていただけに、お気の毒にも本当に長い一日になってしまいました。とはいえ、一応、久々のＡＭＡＺＯＮツーリングを皆さんと楽しむことが出来ました。かつての「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ　ＯＷＮＥＲＳ　ＣＬＵＢ」ツーリングの名簿を見ると、今回ご一緒したＡさんが２７歳と書かれています。現在は私とほぼ同じ６２歳ということですから、約３４年振りにご一緒したＡＭＡＺＯＮツーリングです。ＡさんのＡＭＡＺＯＮは、当時のままですから、この白いＡＭＡＺＯＮも３４年振りのツーリングです。こんな素晴らしい再会とツーリングが楽しめたのも「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮのお陰ですし、この日のために、気持ち良くスペアエンジンを貸してくださったＮさんのお陰に他なりません。本当に感謝、感謝、、、です。

Sunday the 8th started under bright skies. At Guesthouse Dalarna, the morning started at day break with the sound of an Amazon engine warming up. With a bit of buzz left from yesterday's wine, Mr. N and Mr G with the red Amazon went off for an early photo shoot. The rest of us were presented with a sumptuous Swedish breakfast. At 9am, the 5 Amazons were off for a day of touring through the Aizu countryside. We took a break for a photoshoot by some ginko trees which were somewhere between 400 and 500 years old. Then it was off to Oze. We entered from the Fukushima side thru roads winding thru trees in their autumn splendor. Mr. A who can make his own soba recommended an authentic soba shop where we had soba and hatto which we followed up with another dip in an outdoor onsen bath. We stopped by to buy some fresh local produce and then rushed off to Nishi Nasu Shiobara IC trying to avoid the traffic congestion by getting there by 3pm. We drove into the sunset and I was back home by 17:30. For Mr G in his red Amazon, his drive was much longer as he had to go all the way back to Nagoya, but he got safely back at 23:00. Mr. N. had much more trouble as his Amazon started to show signs of trouble, and he did not get home until 00:25 the next day. He was one of the earliest up, and must have been quite a long day for him. In any case, we all enjoyed our Amazon tour. During our time together over the weekend, we were looking at an old register of a tour we had during the days when "Amazon Owners Club" was still existing. The list showed Mr. A who was with us this weekend at 27 years old. He is about my age so that means that this tour was after a 34 year gap. Mr. A's Amazon is the same white Amazon as 34 years ago. My Amazon .122 has made all this happen again for me, and I am especially indebted to Mr. N who has "lent" me his engine.

「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」が、１１月７日（土）、８日（日）の両日、行われました。１１月７日（土）午前７時半に東北自動車道の佐野ＳＡに集合したのは、ＡＭＡＺＯＮ１２３ＧＴのＡさん（群馬・桐生）とはるばる名古屋から夜を徹して走って来てくれた”赤アマゾン”ことＧさん、そして、１２２ＳのＮさん（神奈川・相模）と、１２３ＧＴが板金中で、仕方なくハイラックス・サーフで参加のＯさんに、私の「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮの５台。本来は、１２２ＳのＫさん（東京・中野）と、新たに仲間に加わったＣさん（神奈川・鎌倉）の１２２Ｓの合計７台が集まる予定でしたが、そうは簡単に話は進みませんでした。Ｋさんは、感冒性下痢に苦しんでいるそうで、遅れて西那須野塩原ＩＣで合流、Ｃさんは、電気系統のトラブルで、午前３時に鎌倉を出発したものの、八王子の整備工場に寄ることとなり、夕方のホテル合流。ということで、差し当たって、４台のＡＭＡＺＯＮと１台のハイラックス・サーフでスタート。東北自動車道の西那須野塩原ＩＣへと向かいました。西那須野塩原ＩＣから塩原温泉へと向かった「菓茶寮林檎庵」というカフェで小休止。「”りんご”庵」というくらいですからアップルパイを堪能して、体調の優れないＫさんのＡＭＡＺＯＮも合流、この度の「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」が始まりました。その後、「ゲストハウス　ダーナラ」のオーナーＯさんと待ち合わせをして、塩原温泉に置いてあるＯさんのＰＶ４４４とＤｕｅｔを拝見しました。数年前まで実動していたというだけに、旧いＶｏｌｖｏのわりにはコンディションも良さそうで、来年からのレストアと実動復帰に期待が膨らみます。そして、そのガレージから、”山道”を歩いて、渓谷にひっそりと佇む、Ｏさんに言わせると「世界遺産”級”」の蕎麦屋さんへ。確かに、「こんな所」に、今にも崩れ落ちそうな「こんな建物」が、、、と、驚きながらも、紅葉の美しい渓谷で、川のせせらぎをＢＧＭに、お蕎麦とおでん、名物”草だんご”など「秘境の味」を堪能しました。のんびりとくしたくつろぎの後、Ｏさんの先導で向かった、福島県南会津の「ゲストハウス　ダーナラ」（http://www.dalarna.jp/guest/about.html）は、萱葺き屋根の古民家を改築したそうで、まるで、ヨーロッパの田舎の街角に来たような錯覚さえ覚える素晴らしいゲストハウスでした。ＡＭＡＺＯＮを並べれば、本当にスウェーデンそのもの、、、。近くの「赤湯温泉」で、赤い鉄分を多量に含んだ”赤い”お湯の気持ち良い露天風呂で山々の美しい紅葉を楽しんで、「ゲストハウス　ダーナラ」へ戻ると、トラブルを克服してやって来たＣさんのＡＭＡＺＯＮも到着。早速、古民家そのままの囲炉裏を囲んで、オーナーのＯさん差し入れの会津の地酒でアペリティフ。Ｏさんご自慢の本格的スウェーデン料理の晩餐後も、美味しいワインﾄとともに、ＡＭＡＺＯＮ談義に”酔いしれ”会津の夜は、賑やかに更けていきました。

We started off on a 2 day "Amazon Autumn Foliage Tour" on Saturday 7th. The meeting place was Sano SA on the Tohoku expressway at 7am. 5 Amazons were able to get there - Mr. A with his 123GT from Kiryu Gunma, Mr. G with his red Amazon from Nagoya, and Mr.N with his 122S from Sagami Kanagawa. Mr. O came with this Hilux Surf as his 123GT was not able to leave the shop in time. Mr. K's 122S from Nakano and Mr. C's 122S from Kamakura were also supposed to join, but things never go as planned. Mr. K. had come down with a flu and came later to join us at Shiobara IC while Mr. C suffered from electrical problems and despited leaving Kamakura at 3am, he had to stop by the service shop in Hachioji and was not able to get to the hotel until later in the evening. Anyway, 4 Amazons and 1 Hilux Surf start off towards the Nishinasu Shiobara IC. There was a cafe famous for apples so we stopped by for some apple pie. Mr. K's Amazon was able to catch up with us here. We met up with the owner of Guesthouse Dalarna Mr. O to see his PV444 Duet which he keeps in Shiobara. This PV444 had been in working conditions until a few years ago and was in good condition so we all look forward to have it up and working again after being restored next year. We walked down the mountain path from there to go to a Soba shop which was located in a "hidden spot" at the bottom of a ravine. We were all surprised that they were able to have a soba shop in such a location, but we enjoyed our soba & oden with the autumn leaves surrounding us and the sound of the river running. From there, with Mr O at the lead, we drove out to Minami Aizu Fukushima to Guesthouse Dalarna. It is a renovated old Japanese house, but looks like and old European house. With the Amazons lined up in front, one could fantasize that we were all in Sweden. We went over to the onsen - Akaonsen for a dip with another beautiful scenary of autumn leaves. We found that Mr. C had finally made it to the guest house when we got back and we all got around the hearth for a round of local sake. Then out came a great parade of swedish food with wine. Time past quickly as we ate, drank and talked endlessly about our Amazons.

いよいよ、エンジンをバラバラにして、オーバーホールのための具体的準備を始めました。まずは、問題の発端となった、中心軸受け部分がガタガタに剥離しはじめていたものの何とかくっついていたベークライト製のカムギアを引っ張ったら、写真のように、いとも簡単に分解してしまいました。もし、あのまま、走っていたら、きっと、すぐに、この状態となり、当然、エンジンはブローアップしていたでしょう。本当に、決断を下して良かったと思います。で、ピストンを外し、燃焼室を覗いたら、カーボンというかスラッジというか、物凄いことになっていました。ひとつの燃焼室を磨いたものの、汚れたままの燃焼室をご覧ください。この有様でした。さらに各シリンダー弁の焼け具合もまちまち、、、。中の一本など、まるで錆びたような状態でした。本当に、良くここまで走ってきたものだと、我ながら感心、、、というか、唖然。さらに、メタルは、比較的綺麗だったのですが、中のひとつには、「虫食い」のような状態も発見。これも時間の問題だったかもしれません。ということで、ガレージに来てくれて、いろいろアドバイスをしていただいた１２３ＧＴのＯさんと、専属メカニックと共に、必要部品発注のための洗い出しをしました。結局、ＣＶＩとＩＰＤというＶＯＬＶＯ旧車パーツを扱っているスウェーデンの部品屋にオンラインで発注。この際、せっかくバラしたのだから、可能な限り新品部品に、、、ということで、合計すると、１９００ＵＳ＄つまり、約１７万円＋送料税金の部品代となりました。ま、「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮの延命大手術ですから、いたしかたない、、、と自分に言い聞かせています。明日は「ＡＭＡＺＯＮ紅葉ツーリング」で那須塩原を経由して福島県会津の「ダーナラ　ゲストハウス」まで７台のＡＭＡＺＯＮを連ねて行ってきます。Ｎさんからお借りしているスペアエンジンも快調そのもの。エンジンのオイル交換も終わり、あとは、今日午後に洗車ワックスをかければ、準備万端です。約３０年振りのＡＭＡＺＯＮ仲間とのツーリング。とても楽しみです。

The Amazon .122 engine has finally been dismantled and is now ready for a complete overhaul. The center of the cam gear had started to fall off but had still been holding on, but when we pulled on the bakelite cam gear, it fell apart as you can see in the photo. If I had continued to drive in this condition, the gear would have fallen apart while I was driving and the engine would have blown up. I am now glad that I made my decision not to drive the car any further. After taking off the pistons and looking into the combustion room, I was surprised to see a whole lot of something that was like carbon or sludge. I took a photo after one of the rooms were cleaned out and you can see the dirty one next to it as a comparison. The cylinders showed various degrees of blackness and one of them looked like it was rusting. Its a miracle that the engine was able to come this far under these conditions. The metal portion was relatively clean, but one of them looked like it had been eaten by bugs. In any case, 123GT owner Mr. O and the mechanic put their heads together and started to make a list of necessary new parts. We decided to order from 2 sources - CVI and IPD which are Swedish parts retailers which sell old Volvo parts on line. I wanted to really clean up and change anything that looked a bit out of sorts to new parts and the total came out to be 170thd yen plus freight. Oh well, this should allow my .122 to live several years longer - so I am telling myself. We will go touring thru Nasu Shiobara from tomorrow to visit the Dalarna Guesthouse - a Swedish inn in Aizu Fukushima prefecture. Seven Amazons will be joining us for the drive up to the guest house run by the same owner as the Lilla Dalarna Swedish restaurant in Roppongi. The engine I am borrowing from Mr. N is running very well with the engine oil being changed. I will wax the car this afternoon and look forward to a Amazon tour which will be my first after a 30 year blank.
