The first day of Giro started off from Asama Prince Hotel, made its way thru Komoro and Ueda City, up thru Jizo Pass and into Sugadaira, Kusatsu Onsen, Tsumagoi, down Asama Shirane Kazan route and down back into Karuizawa. A 225kn route with 8 checkpoints. It was a high speed rally with .122 only able to make it barely 5 min. within the time. The course was set within the same type of route as the Japan Alpen Rally in the past going up and down 2000m class passes which is quite a lot of work for the old classic cars in this rally. There was a 800 meter hill climb that were were able to choose whether to participate. We decided we might as well since we entered the rally, so we wset off with the Porsche 356, Louts, Lancia, Renault A110, Triumph, Alfa Romeo and other great sportscars. We felt a bit out of place but climbed up the hill on 2nd gear to get the starting point. We had to wait in line, but being a Scandinavian car, the water temperature rose and we had to turn on the electric fan. At the starting point, the official said "wow, I never expected to see an Amazon here. But I guess the Amazon has left its mark in Safari, Acropolis and Monte Carlo rallies. I really like this car". So with this strong supporting words we started off but this was and Amazon after all, and even tho the distance was only 800m there was a 20sec lag between the cars ahead of us. The CPs measured us to the 100th of a second and during this time, we had to make sure that the cars were ok, we didn't go off course. At the same time, I wondered where my comrades were. There was Mr. S on a P1800E, a Fiat50 Spider from the TACC. We sometime got to run together during the Giro which made the whole event even more enjoyable.

Each entrant is allowed a support car at the "Giro". Entry fee for the rally itself was 100,000 yen which included a party and a room at the hotel for 2. The support car entry was 60,000 yen for 2 including a party. When you think about it, at this price, you would think it makes more sense to enter the rally, but for Mr.O, his .123 Amazon 123GT was in the the shop for a transmission overhaul and other. Mr. O had finished 6th at the recent Japan Historic Rally and was ideal as a support car. The support car with car no.S37 turned out to be an eye turner. The BMW was a 355 open metaltop. Only a few cars had made it to Japan and cost more than 10 mils yen. With its elegant coupe body and luxurious leather interior, the BMW was packed with Amazon parts in cardboard boxes and other misc. tools and old rags. The trunk existed for the sole purpose of storing the 3 part foldable roof so everything had to be put in the rear of the car. This extra luxury support car followed my .122 Amazon with Mr. O's wife giving us timely advice.

/a>The day before the start of "Giro", Mr. S and I promised ourselves that we would not drink. But when we went to fill up at the gas station, I found a carp restaurant. I just had to have carp as after all, this was Karuizawa,so we decided to start dinner at 5.30pm but promised ourselves that we would have just one drink. Well that one drink turned out to be the first of several and I ended the evening in the hot spring of Hoshino spa. After that, I slept like a child and started the next morning at 5am. The weather report showed cloudy but outside, rain had started to fall. I had thought I would polish my Amazon before the race, but the weather not allowing, made my way to the starting point at Asama Prince at 7am. A group of famous old cars had already gathered. Mr. O had promised to act as my service team and he was already there with his BMW. With the help of Mr. O, I put my car number on and we went for the drivers meeting, started calculating timing to pass check points. Suddenly it was 9:00am and the first car was off to a start. I was no.37 so my start time was 9:19.00. I followed car no.30 Facel Vega (1962) up the ramp, my 1964 Amazon was introduced and we were thrown into the rally. The start was immediately followed by a only¡¡12 sec 1CP and 9 sec 2CP. This means that right after the start there were checkpoints where the time was measured to a 100th of second. The average speed to to 1CP was 15km/h, and 2CP was 20km/h. After being thrown into the rally, Amazon .122 had no idea what it was doing and passed 1CP with a 7sec35 difference, 2CP with a 4sec93 difference and at this point, was 78th of 89 entrants.

At noon, May 31st (Sun), the "Giro di Karuizawa" came to a close. The 2 day rally was held over 350km. I wanted to update this blog as soon as I crossed the goal line, but this being my first classic car rally, I was totally exhausted and very very disappointed and unable to update. I went out for fondue and wine with Mr. S. and just fell asleep that day. The result was that we finished 64th of a total of 89 entrants. Our first classic rally made us realize just how difficult and how fun the race was - and it was just great watching all those great cars that created the history of motorization running at full speed on normal roads. I met lots of people passionate about cars and also was able to reunite with old friends. The 2 days passed by in a blink, with lots of drama and episodes which were both challenging and amusing. I will start to work on writing out the details of my adventure, but for now, must go to sleep again.

Tomorrow is the big day - the start of Giro di Karuizawa. The weather here has continued to be rainy. The sky occasionally brightens but generally, cold rain is falling on the dark green trees. Mr. S and myself have been out on last year's course with a navigation, calculator, stopwatch, trip meter and a cooking timer. If you look at last years results, the time difference is all on an 100th of a second - wow just like formula 1 ! To drive a classic car over normal roads and mountain passes and get there on the 100th of a second to the target time is almost a miracle. This means that it is essential that your trip meter and the basic measurement of the organizers are in synch. Today at 3pm, the point to check the odometer was announced. Right outside of the starting point - Asama Prince Hotel - the organizers had set down a pylon showing where they measured one kilometer. From here, you need to ajust your meter exactly to the measurement of the organizers. Being first timers, we quickly made our way to the measuring point and adjusted our meter. At 6am tomorrow, the rally will be open and after inspection, the rally will start at 9am.

2 days ago, I got home from the Nurburgring 24 hours race. I've been down at T-Motors to get the final details done for Giro di Karuizawa like changing the shock absorbers to Kayaba. I'm in Karuizawa now but its raining. My .122 has never been out in the rain, but it looks like the rally will be held under the rain. With Mr. S we have been working on simulations. This is the first classic rally for both of us, and things like going thru time controls that are measured to the 100th of a second very new to us and we both are struggling. Thats when Mr. S remembered that he had a "Curta". This is rally treasure along with Halda Twinmaster (trip) Speedpilot , stop watch by Heure. This ¡ÉCurta ¡Éis a manual handcalculator which tells you the speed per second and per minute. There were other such things made by Tiger and Pilot but this ¡ÉCurta ¡Éis made by Lichtenstein and can be held in one hand. Mr. S had used this during his heydays at Japan Alpen Rally in the 1960s, but this is 40 years ago and it took a while to remember just how to use it. After a while, we were able to master the machine, but the question remains whether this will actually be of any use during the rally.

I am in Nurburgring Germany this week. I have to come here every year for work. This year, a car that looks like a supercar will enter into the 24 hour endurance race. I am on the management side so nothing to do with driving so I had a bit of time today. Before the night session classifying race, a race called Nurburgring 24h Classic featuring classic cars was held. There among the Porsches, BMW, M3s and Benz I found an Amazon 1965 122S. The cars was driven by a father and son team. Even though the course looks like a peaceful country road, it is a 26km world famous car breaker course, so the Amazon's performance was a bit ???. The key is to enjoy which I plan to do also when I get back to enter the Giro di Karuizawa.

My .122 has accidentaly made its entry into the Giro di Karuizawa so I discussed with Mr. S who will be my co-driver what kind of uniform we would wear. Most of the entrants are famous old sportscars and the drivers come wearing old racing suits, some with leather helmets and goggles. Alas, the Amazon is a 4door sedan so these will not do. I finally found something that seemed to fit on a web site on the West Coast. Actually, Mr O (123GT) his wife and myself had just purchased a winter jacket, but this race called for a lighter spring jacket. The price was 3,000 yen and reasonable, had Volvo, Castrol and BBS logos - altho they were a bit different from the real ones. Also, "Turbo Volvo" and "Volvo Racing" may be a bit for the Amazon but then again, the important thing is to enjoy the atmosphere.

Right now, there is a marker stuck to the door of the passenger side beow the window sash. When I went to the gasoline stand the other day, the attendant asked me whether I was aware that there was something stuck on my door and whether he should take it off. This is an important piece of tape and is my secret weapon for the Giro di Karuizawa. My friends Mr. K (PV544) and Mr. M (P1800) who are both experienced classic car rally-ist have taught me this little trick and I repeatedly practiced during my recce at Karuizawa. During a classic car rally, there are numerous special stages where you pull into a parking lot and you are told to do 30m in 7 sec, 150m in 21sec and so on- and it is timed to the last millisecond. The closer you come into the time, the higher you place in the rally. The time is recorded when the center of the front tire passes the measure. If you are in an open top car, you can lean out and adjust your time. But with the Amazon, the seat position is low and there is no hope to be able to see below the front tire. This is where the tape under the window comes in. During Golden Week holidays, we practiced by placing a tape on the road which would be the goal point, then went on until we were able to get the exact place where the tape on the passenger side and the goal line met the center of the front wheel. Try to remember when you were at driving school, the instructors used to tell you that the stop sign line should align to the triangle window. Its something like that.

I tried my hand at the course for Giro di Karuizawa and found that it was actually a very challenging rally course. The course goes thru many of the mountain passes that I had been used at the Japan Alpen Rally and the Shigakogen Rallies. The one difference was that what was once gravel roads are now paved with tire marks of what one could imagine to be marks made by rally drivers with their 4WD using this course as practice grounds. The tire marks cover the roads until they are all black - this means that the hill climb and hill down are that challenging. This in particular for a 50 year old Amazon. When we made our way up to Sugadaira, snow still remained on the sides of the road, but the radiator temperature kept rising to the point where we had to pull over. That was when the enginge overheated. The problem is, all the check points are at the peak of the mountain passes and you are forced to stop. Once we stop, the engine overheats. However, this Amazon had won the hot rallies of Safari and Acropolis so there must be a way. Added fan or increasing the core of the radiator. In any case, this recce allowed me to understand just where we stand and I will bring my .122 back to the shop next week for updates.
