After receiving my car number, I was all set to go and put the key to the ignition of my Amazon .122. OOOOHHHH! There had always been a slight noise to the engine but today, it had increased to alarming levels! I had prayed that the engine would hold up to the rally I so looked forward to, byut noise this morning was at levels I could no longer ignore. I ran to T Motors and was told it was caused by metal and the engine would not last. My last hope lay in the garage where Mr. O goes to with his .123. This result was that they thought it was the cam gear. There is only 2 more days to the start of the big rally. No time to get any spare parts or opening up the engine. Mr. O came to the shop and told me that his .123 also had the same type of noise and recommended a certain additive. I ran off to purchase the Plus 91 that was recommended and found it at a Toyota dealer. At this point, things are literally at gods will. I really want to cross the finish line at Kyoto at the Rally Nippon but that is 1000km away. 2 more days and I must come up with some way to achieve this... why is this happening to me now?

The entry list for Rally Nippon was announed today. The final list consists of 62 famous classic cars (including some Japanese makes such as Toyota 2000GT and Honda S800). The oldest car is the 1925 Bugatti T22. My Amazon is a 1964 so it is within the "modern car" category. The car number I was given was #49. The other cars are those that you would see in any famous classic car rally, but my Amazon stands out a bit in that sense. There are no other Volvos on the list. Compared to the Mille Miglia where most of the cars were 2 door sport cars, there are a variety of cars at the Rally Nippon from 2 door to sedan to sports coupe. If you happen to be close by the course of the rally, please take time to watch as you will see some rare breeds of truly classic cars. Don't forget to root for car #49.

I went to see the Mille Miglia race makes it goal today. The race started on Oct 10th and over 4 days,
traveled 1400 km. The first car came back to the final checkpoint at Gaien-mae around 5pm. I awaited the arrival with Mr. S with a glass of wine in hand who is my co-driver at Rally Nippon. We sat and drank in the beauty of the classics along with the wine. Mr. K who also owns an Amazon had entered the race with a 1054 Fiat 1100TV. He made it past the goal line wiht his cute small bodied vehicle. Mr. T who is a traditional Japanese musician and who will also enter the Rally Nippon crossed the finish line with a 1956 MGA. Mr. H who is the son of the organizer of Giro di Karuizawa made it with this 1956 Lotus MK11 Le Mans. Everyone was fatigued, but in front of the crowd that had gathered in front of Harajuku Station, their faced glowed with satisfaction and hapiness. The cars shone under the lights and the swing of Jazz. The Mille Miglia made its way thru the north eastern part of Japan, but Rally Japan will make its way into the West. I hope to be able to cross the finish line after 1000km at Kyoto with the same kind of satisfied look I saw on all the people that finished the race today.

My .122 Amazon will enter into the Rally Nippon which will start from this Saturday and goal on the 20th covering 1000kms. My co-driver is Mr. S who used to be the PR Directori for MBJ and also was my co-driver at the Giro di Karuizawa held in May. Mr. S was actually working at Yanase when Yanase was importing the Amazon and he was involved in the importing side of business (at Scandinavian Motors). Up until now, the Mille Miglia race was the longest classic car event in Japan (goaled at Meiji Shrine today), but this Rally Nippon is a totally different type of classic car rally. It goes thru old cities of Gifu, Shirakawa, Nara, Kyoto and is officially recognized by Unesco. It is sponsored by Yomiuri Newspaper and will start at 7am on Oct 17th from the National Theatre close by to the Judiciary Court in Hanzomon. The event will make its goal at Kyoto Regency hotel at 5pm on Oct 20th.

After hobbling back to Tokyo on my "clutch-less" .122 after the Ikaho Classic Meeting, I went off the next day - Sep 21st - to the Vespa Meeting 2009 with a Vespa ET3 Primavera. This is an annual event where all the steel body Vespas gather. This year, the meeting was held a Soleil Hill somewhere close by to Misaki on the Miura peninsula. The main body of the meeting were the steel Vespas, but a group of "plastic body" Vespas also were also there, making a total of 220 Vespas. The heavy "steel body" 125 Vespas are easily overtaken by the lighter current 50cc scooters. Old Vespas are equipped with a handle gear (shifting gears are done using the gear on the left handle bar), has no battery and runs on an engine that is fit for a cultivator. So, it is no light deal to have to travel 80km one way from Tokyo. You need to add the engine oil directly into the gas tank, but given the amount of distance needed to travel on high engine rotation, an extra bit of engine oil was added to make sure that nothing went amiss. This year's event was organized by Vespa Club Kanagawa and most of the Vespa owners were in their 20s and 30s (much younger than your classic car owner!), with a sprinkling of "Gaijins". One of the members of VCK was a DJ and he had invited 2 Ska bands to the event. I had not been aware of ska music, but after listening to the 2 bands, fell in love with the music. The 2nd band - The Silver Sonics - were great and I recommend that you download their music for a listen - I'm sure you will feel better after the experience.

Today is the last day of the Japanese holiday - Silver Week. Silver perhaps coming from the fact that one of the public holiday was for the day of the aged. As I now am the proud owner of an Amazon .122 which has no airconditioning, I started off the holidays by getting a crew cut - ending up making me look suspiciously like a construction worker. With this new look, I participated in the Ikaho Classic Car Meeting on Sep 20th. This was my 2nd classic car rally following the Giro di Karuizawa. Mr. K with his PV544 and codriver Mr. N (they had won the event last year) were there as were Mr.M with his P1800, Mr & Mrs K with their Fiat 800 Spider. In addition, Mr & Mrs M whom I had worked with for 20 years thru the WRC activities and other European motorsports events were there from Gotenba with their 166 MGB. All seemed well under the bright autumn skies, but in fact, driving up the hill from Shibukawa IC towards Skyland Park where the event was to start, my .122 gave me a bad surprise by deciding not to let me shift gears. I somehow made it to the starting point where Dr Amazon - Mr. N advised me to start pumping the clutch pedeal in order to take out the air from the master cylinder. Mr. A who is one of the original members of the Amazon Owners Club and who has been driving a 1967 123GT in addition to a 1963 122 commented that his Amazons often did the same thing to him. I kept pumping on resulting in my leg being sore even before the rally started, but after some time, air bubbles floated up and out and I was able to make it to the start line in time. 220 old foreign and Japanese makes had entered into the event and car numbers were given based on the year make of the car. My .122 Amazon was car # 45. The event started and ended at the SKyline Park and wound its 90km way around Mt Haruna and Lake Haruna. There were only 3 check points and the average speed was measures using a speed gun. The 3 check points were right after the start and after that, all you had to do was follow the map and drive around the wonderful scenary. Or so it should have been, but right after the start, the clutch started to act up again and all I could do was pray that I did not have to stop and keep adjusting the axel to meet the gear. Unfortunately, the event was closely monitored by the police so I could see the police cars watching for cars that did not stop at the stop signs and even though the event was a half day event, I was completely exhausted by the time I crossed the finish line. With my gear in this condition, I knew that if I waited too long to get back to Tokyo, I would get stuck in an endless traffic jam which would force me to have to keep shifting gears. So I rushed away right after the goal. The news I received after reaching Tokyo was the Mr. K with his PV544 had a podium finish again this year, finishing at 3rd place. In any case, I guess I must count myself lucky that I had actually reached the goal, found out that I still had problems to fix before the big Rally Nippon. My .122 will go back into the hospital in preparation for the big rally.

August is almost over and there is a feeling that Autumn is just around the corner. This means that the season for classic rallys is almost here. I have decided to enter into Rally Nippon with my .122 (http://www.rallynippon.org/). The rally starts from the Marunouchi area of Tokyo on the 17th and goes thru Nihon Daira at Shimizu, Gifu, Shirakawa, Nara and Kyoto. It is a 1000km rally held over 4 days. This rally is to commemorate the 1300 year of Heijo Capital and is supported by Unesco. 80 cars from Japan and 20 cars from overseas are expected to enter. I received a beautiful envelope with an acceptance letter and 3 posters. The entry fee is rather expensive at 500thd yen, but the first night, a reception will be held at the Penninsula Hotel at Tokyo, 2 nights at Gifu Miyako Hotel, followed by stays at Nara Hotel, Kyoto Hyatt Regency so hopefully, the I will get what I paid for. Yesterday from 7pm, 2 classic cars were displayed in front of the Ralph Laurent store at Omotesando. It was a joint event where RL launched their new watch and Rally Nippon did a bit of a PR stunt. The rally is about 1.5 month away and I look forward to it, but before that, I will be entering the Ikaho Classic Car Rally on September 20th.

Our experience at Giro di Karuizawa was taken up in the most recent Car Graphic magazine. The article was titled "Old Rally Boy's Challenge". The content was more of self satisfaction than challenge, but the article covered 2 pages and the photos really had a lot of atmosphere. Please take a look for yourselves. As the article says, I am actually thinking about revenge. Maybe if the race was over a longer distance - this has made me consider entering a rally in October that covers about 1,000 kms. Before that, I will enter the Ikaho Classic Car Meeting - a one day event. That reminds me, today is the day of "Splendore Ikaho". Mr. K (PV544) and Mr. M (P1800) and other TACC have entered the event. Today has been cloudy with intermittent rain. This is probably easier on classic cars than the searing heat so one could say it was a good rally day.

Day 2 of Giro started on 31st May at 08.30h. It was a course that made its way from Asama Prince hotel to Myogi Mountain, Uchiyama pass and 5 checkpoints - 9CP to 13CP - were waiting for us on this course. The weather report showed that the clouds would give way to sunshine, but it was raining from the morning. When we went out to the parking lot, the open cars were trying to make do by covering up the seats with plastic. My .122 is a four door so a bit out of place in this classic sports rally, but this weather really made me glad it had a roof. We decided to take the rally day by day and at the first 9CP, we came in 0.59 away from the scheduled time and came up to 37th place. At the next 10CP, 2.21sec difference. Not too bad, but that was when the bad started. Coming back to Karuizawa and into the Sengataki parking lot for the line crossing test, I made a big mistake. It was a continuous time control - 9.60 sec followed by 7.20sec. Here, for some unknown reason even to myself, I kind of made a short cut around the pylons, realized my mistake, stopped and reversed which led to a 20 sec penalty. At the next 12CP, we made it in 0.26 sec away, but was down to 81st place. I guess I was seriously shaken with that mistake and at the last CP, came in 10.68sec away. We had seen that the roads were jammed due to the outlet mall and we had taken a different road to get to what we thought was 2 min lead to the control time. But we had made a very simple calculation error - so be it - but left me rather disappointed. Ah, but this was my first classic car rally with lots to learn from. I really appreciate the support given by Mr. O who served as a our service car, Mr. M who came out in the rain to support us, Mr. I of TACC who taught me the ABC of classic car rally and everybody else who gave us their support.

Day 1 of Giro held between 225km and 8 checkpoints came to an end on May 30th 5pm at Asama Prince Hotel. The whole day had been wet and in the high sections like Sugadaira, there was heavy fog. We started off at 78th place and the continued to struggle at most of the CPs with a 5 to 7 sec delay at all the 6 following CPs. However, we were not utterly hopeless and made it across CP5 at Sugadaira with a differnce of 0.23 and suddenly found ourselves in 13th place. But this was momentary and when the day ended, we found ourselves in position 57. If you can make it in within the second, you can make it to a good position, but if you are more than 5 sec out, you don't get anywhere. Thats how tight this rally is. This is all measured thru a very precise timing machine so you can say, the whole rally is about "crossing the line" to the micro second. In order to be able to make any good out of this rally, we were equipped with twin trips, 2 countdown stopwatch that can measure up to the 100th of a second and the Map Shot 2 which had a timer that counted second. My co driver had to keep his eyes on the map at the same time he had to handle all of this, so you can imagine how difficult it is.
