古都ケルンのクラシックカーイベント

世の中は、5月のゴールデンウィーク”らしい”ですが、私は仕事、それも難題を抱えて、ドイツ・ケルンに滞在しています。でも、ドイツの日曜日は、きっちり休みなので、4月29日（日）は、仕事を離れ街歩きをしました。そうしたら、古都ケルン（日本の古都京都と姉妹都市でKyoto strという通りもあります）のド真ん中でクラシックカーイベントとやっていました。「OLDTIMER DATENBLATT」というイベントなのですが、街の一角にずらりとクラシックカーが集結し、車両解説のスタンドを通過するように、グルグルと周回し、観衆は自由自在にクラシックカーを楽しめる、、、という趣向です。ここケルンには、今でこそ、私が帯同していたトヨタＦ１（かつてはＷＲＣも）の拠点ＴＭＧがあるのですが、その昔からドイツ・フォードの拠点でもあるのです。で、ケルンの象徴とも言えるのがFORD TAUNUSなのです。FORD TAUNUS（1951年式）には、フロントに誇らしげにケルン大聖堂のマークが付いています。解説スタンドでは、いかにも物知り風のおじさんが珍しいGLAS 1700GTを紹介しています。もちろんAudiの前身AutoUnionや、ポルシェの車作りのルーツとも言えるPorschトラクターもゴトゴトと元気に走っていました。可愛く美しいデザインでリアエンジン車のBMW700（1960年式）や、珍しい（というか初めて見ました！！）Borgward Isabella（1959年式）、旧東ドイツのトラバントなどもいました。水陸両用車AMPHICAR（1967年式）もグルグルと周回をしています。そしてお馴染みVWビートルなど、いかにもドイツのクラシックカーイベントらしいラインアップなのですが、きっちりとVOLVO PV445（Duett1960年式）やVOLVO 1800ESなども「Hナンバー」を付けて加わっていました。この「Hナンバー」ですが、ナンバープレートの末尾に「H」の文字が付くもので、「ヒストリック」の意味です。ある一定年式より古い車で車検を取る際に、「Hナンバー」を申請。審査に通ると発行されて、通常の税金よりはるかに優遇された税金となるそうです（車種によっては通常課税の1/10とか、、）。さすが、車社会、車文化の熟成したドイツです。自動車文化の継承にクラシックカーがきちんと認知されている証ですね。ということで、束の間の休日なのですが、今夜はクラシック三昧ということで、クラシックコンサートに行きます。

Despite this, Sunday is a rest day that god has given us so everything in Germany is closed. So, I walked away from work and into the old town of Cologne - to an event called Oldtimer Datenblatt. The old timer cars drive around in a circle so that all can see. Cologne is the town where in the past, Ford Europe had its headquartered - and the car that signifies the town is the Ford Taunus. There was a 1951 Ford Taunus with the marque of the great cathedral on its front grill. At the stand, a gentleman was giving a speech about the GLAS 1700GT.Of course, this is germany, so there were Auto Unions, Porsches - in addition to an old Porsche tractor trailer. There was a rear engine BMW700 (1960), in additionto a very rare Borgward Isabella (1959), a Trabant and a 1967 Amphicar. My interest, of course, was the Volvo PV445 (Duett 1960) and a Volvo 1800ES. All these cars came standard with a license plate number that ended with a H. The H stands for historic car, and once the car is registered under this number, it enjoys various benefits like tax breaks and other. Germany is a great auto country and it is this heritage that enables people to enjoy the auto culture.
