新年が明けて、早くも1月も終わりに近づいてきています。「・１２２」ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、地下の駐車場で、じっと冬眠中です。そんな中、”熱い”クラシックカーラリーが、本日スタートします。「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」です。世界３大ラリーと言われるのが”Safari　Rally”、”RAC　Rally”そして”Monte　Carlo　Rally”ですが、今年１００年目を迎えた伝統の「雪と氷」の”Monte　Carlo　Rally”のクラシックカー版で、今年14回目の開催となるのが「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」です。1955〜1980年の間に”Monte　Carlo　Rally”に参戦し、かつFIA（国際自動車連盟）発行の「ヒストリックカー」証明書を所有している車種が参戦資格を持ち、毎年350台以上の歴戦の勇者（車）が真冬のヨーロッパアルプスを舞台に戦うためにモナコに集結します。最新スペックの車種で凌ぎを削るＷＲＣ／ＩＲＣの”Monte　Carlo　Rally”には、ＴＴＥのチームと共に1995年までは毎年参戦していましたが、その後は、Ｆ１以外にモナコに行くことも無く、ご無沙汰だったのですが、一昨年、所用でモナコに行った際に、「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」を知りました。ＡＭＡＺＯＮもＰＶ５４４もＰＶ４４４も、まさに「真剣勝負」を挑んでいました。この「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」初開催の1998年にはＡＭＡＺＯＮ（122S　1964年式）が堂々２位に入賞しているのですから、ラリーの王者として毎年戦い挑むのは当然といえば当然です。とくに、ＡＭＡＺＯＮは、1963年、1964年に「ヨーロッパ・ラリーチャンピオン」２連覇を飾っているのです。というわけで、この「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」が気にはなっていたのですが、昨年の「Rally　Nippon」に出場した際に、1973年式「スプリンター・トレノ」で「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」に挑戦する東京大学と関東自動車工業大学の学生さんと知り合いました。若者の車離れが話題となる昨今ですが、彼らの情熱を目の当たりにし、40年ほど前、彼らと同年代の頃、仲間を募りアルバイトで稼いだ金を握って「カローラ・レビン」で”RAC　Rally”に「やみくもに、、無謀にも」挑戦した自分を想い出しました。以来、東京大学の学生さんには、何かとアドバイスを差し上げたり協力をしてきました。その「スプリンター・トレノ」が、現地時間26日にスコットランドのグラスゴーをスタートしてモナコへ向かいます。「RALLYE MONTE-CARLO HISTORIQUE」は、今ではもう無くなった、昔からの競技方式を踏襲しており、ヨーロッパ各地、今年はマラケッシュ、グラスゴー、ワルシャワ、バルセロナ、レイムの五ヶ所からモナコへと集結します。今年もエントリーリストを見ると、ＡＭＡＺＯＮが６台、ＰＶ５４４とＰＶ４４４が５台参加しています。名だたる強豪を相手に学生チームの「スプリンター・トレノ」が戦いを挑むわけですが、ドライバーには、国内外ラリーを戦ってきた大ベテランの国政久郎さん、コ・ドライバーには、このプロジェクトの起案者でもあり、東大教授でもある、これまた大ベテランの草加浩平さんがつとめます。そして総勢１９名の学生が、真冬のアルプスで、夜を徹してサポートに当たります。良い成績を収めてくれることを祈りながら、ラリーの成り行きを見守りたいと思います。「スプリンター・トレノ」の活躍の様子は、下記ブログでご覧いただけます。

The new year has passed and we are close to the end of January. My .122 Amazon is laying in the basement waiting for spring to come. In the meantime, the classic rallye is heating up with the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique starting for the 14th time. The WRC version of Rallye Monte-Carlo is up ther with the Safari rally and RAC rally and will be welcoming its 100th year this year. The Historique Rally is open to any cars that had entered into the Monte-Carlo rally during 1955 to 1980 and must hold a historic car certificate issued by the FIA. About 350 cars gather to Monte-Carlo to challenge the winter roads in the French Alps. I had been going to the Monte-Carlo Rally with the TTE team until 1995, but had not been there for a while until recently when I visited I came to know about this historic rally. I saw some Amazons, PV544 and PV444 going full on in the rally. In 1998, an 1964 Amazon 122S came in 2nd place so this rally had left a special place in my mind. Last year when I entered Rally Nippon, one of the entrants - a 1973 Sprinter Toreno a team made up of Tokyo University and Kanto Jidosha Kogyo Univ- said that they would challenge the 2011 Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique. These days, everyone talks about how little interest the youth of Japan have in cars, but looking at this team of youths, I was reminded of my youth - about 40 years ago - when I suddenly tried to enter into the RAC rally with a Corolla Levin. After meeting this team during Rally Nippon, I kept up contact with them and will be rooting for them. They will start out of Glasgow on the 26th of January towards Monaco. Other entrants wil gather from Marrakesh, Warsaw, Barcelono and Reims. I checked the entry list and saw 6 Amazons and 5 PV544/444s. The Japanese entry - Sprinter Toreno - will be driven by veteran K. Kunimasa and the co-pilot wil be the project leader and professor K. Kusaka. 19 students will be supporting the project. I will keep an eye on their challenge and hope for the best for them.
